| Chili festival will spice up downtown Fri, 16 May 2008 09:47:00 EST Spice up May the chili way. Guests will have the opportunity to sample an array of chili and salsa during the 19th annual N.J. State Chili and Salsa Cook-off in downtown Toms River. The cook-off will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17, with winners awarded prizes and a chance to compete in the 2008 International Chili Society World Chili Championship, according to a news release. During the event, chili will be judged in three different categories: red chili, chili verde and salsa. Judging is based on flavor, texture of the meat, consistency and blend of spices, aroma and color. In addition, there will be two People's Choice categories — red chili and salsa. Unlike the International Chili Society entries, People's Choice entries are allowed to feature beans and pasta. Last year, more than 6,000 people attended the event, which is the only state-level competition officially sanctioned by the International Chili Society in New Jersey. Winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m. the day of the event. A total of $4,500 will be given out in prize money to winners at the festival. Live music will be provided by Boccigalupe and the Bad Boys, Debra Dynamite and The Torpedoes, and radio personalities from WJRZ 100.1 FM and 95.9 FM The WRAT. There will also be vendors, inflatable rides for children, games, contests and street performers. "Cooks get really excited about the Toms River competition because it's one of the earliest competitions on the calendar and the winner has the honor of not only securing a spot to compete in the world championship, but to be the New Jersey State champion as well," said Steve Falkowski, a society judge, in a prepared statement. Festival attendees can purchase tasting kits for chili sampling. Tasting kits can be purchased for $8 in advance at the Downtown Toms River Business Office, 218 Main St., or by calling (732) 946-2711. Cost is $9 on the day of the event. Heck, it didn't even see print for well nigh 70 years after it was written and left to molder. And when it's been discussed at all, it's mostly as the subject of a significant court case regarding the ownership of a manuscript vs. the right to publication. |
